Bringing Music To Worship

Members of Good Shepherd have recently formed a Music Group which met for the first time in April.  At the first meeting, ideas regarding how to enhance the worship services with assorted music styles were raised.  It was decided that the best approach would be to use music from all available resources and create blended services.  Members of the group were asked to bring titles of several music selections that they felt were favorites of the congregation, easy to sing, and uplifting, to discuss at the next meeting.  At the second meeting, the music selections were reviewed and discussed.  It was decided that music would be selected from Lutheran Worship (the “blue” hymnal), Lutheran Service Book (the “brown” hymnal which we are currently using), The Other Song Book, and the music book recently created for Contemporary Worship Services.

The Music Group will work together with Pastor to coordinate music from all of the available resources as well as to introduce new songs to the congregation.  Members of the group will also present special music selections during services.

Meetings to select music and/or music practice will be scheduled as needed, dates and times of which will be announced.  We will meet for music practice in June – date and time to be announced.  The next scheduled meeting for music selection will be held at 7:00 PM on July 8th at Good Shepherd.

In the meantime, we are looking for people who might be interested in working with us to create Power Point presentations and/or run the computer during services.  We are also seeking anyone that might be interested in singing or playing an instrument.  Our practices are informal in nature – so if you just like to sing or play an instrument, please join us!

If you have a desire to be part of this group (voice, instrument, computer, or simply “ideas”), please contact Myrna Tate at (517) 285-7996.

Celebrating 20 Years of Quilting!

The Quilt Ladies have been very busy over the last 20 years.  Our main project each year is to make quilts for Lutheran World Relief, and each year we make close to or over 100 quilts.   We also work on other projects such as making lap robes for local nursing homes. We also participate in making one of the Lenten Fellowship Suppers each year.  We were just (April/May edition) featured in an article for Michigan In Touch celebrating our work.

We raised money toward our quilts last year with a rummage sale. Asking for donations of used sheets from local hotels and our congregation is an ongoing process.  So if you have any used sheets or material you would like to donate please contact Mary Lou Tiedeman.

Just recently we created a MSU quilt for the live auction at the “Signature Auction Event” fundraiser for Children’s Trust Fund.  The quilt along with 4 MSU football tickets sold for $600.  The proceeds help abused children here in Michigan.

We are also currently asking for your help in collecting “Travel Size” hygiene items such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes, lotions, deodorant, combs, etc. to be put into bags we are making.  The bags will go to SIREN/Eaton Shelter.  Please place donations in the “Quilt Donations” box in the narthex by the coat racks.

We celebrated with a little fun in Frankenmuth.  We toured St. Lorenz Lutheran Church and had lunch at Zhenders.  It was a great day.

Finally, we want to thank everyone for their support over the last 20 years, and we look forward to your continuing help for 20 more years of missions.
